Food Information
Here at Purple House Foods, we strive to promote healthy living fueled by a nutrient dense diet. We like to give our members ideas and information regarding the foods we consume. In this section you will find information that will be help you with your food planning.
Here are a few tid bits about the produce you get through Purple House Foods.
- Typically, 4 bananas weigh more than a pound. If you regularly buy bananas, you may be buying 3 to 4 pounds of bananas in a bunch.
- Organic apples commonly come in 3# bags. We purchase apples in a bulk box, so they are slightly bigger than the apples you would find in a packaged manner. For that reason, you may want to order 4 or 5 pounds of apples, you would have relatively the same number of apples you are used to for the week.
- Oranges are ordered by the case containing anywhere from 88 to 110 oranges. Our website allows you to order them individually. Oranges are fantastic to juice. If you ordered 14 oranges, you can share two oranges with your children each day at snack-time.
- Onion and garlic come in large quantities and will not be ordered weekly. If there is demand we will order them monthly. They keep well for weeks without a problem.
- Celery is a versatile veggie. Did you ever have “ants on a log” when you were a child? Slather some peanut butter on a piece of celery and then put raisins on top... Yummy and healthy, and keeps well in a lunch box. Celery is also great diced in soups, casseroles, or by itself... You actually burn calories while eating celery.
- You can purchase cans of organic raisins, they are excellent.
- Carrots and celery are both wonderful to juice. Carrot sticks keep well in a lunch box.
- The boxes of mixed greens are an easy way to make a simple salad (try some raisins in your next salad), or to add greens (like spinach) into any soup or casserole you make. Add a handful or two just before serving, so it is only wilted- not mushy.
Is it true that celery doesn't have much nutritional content?
Isn't it just fiber and water, basically?
Well, let me tell you, nothing could be farther from the truth!
- Celery is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is high in fiber and tons of vitamins.
- The nutritional value and health benefits of celery makes it ideal for maintaining optimum health and weight loss.
- Celery is FANTASTIC for juicing because each stalk produces SO MUCH juice!
- I have found it to be the cheapest ingredient to juice with and gives your juice a nice zing!
- If you don't juice, celery is a great snack food for anyone.
- Cut it into pieces, cover it with any nut butter (peanut, almond, pecan) and throw some raisins on it... Ants on a Log!
- It will give you much needed vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and natural enzymes that only raw vegetables can provide!
- Chop a few stalks into small pieces and add it on top of your next salad, adding everything that makes celery great!
In short, celery is great! And if you're trying to lose weight, you will actually burn calories by eating a stalk of celery!!
